Kairos Power Begins Construction On Hermes Low Power

KAIROS POWER BEGINS CONSTRUCTION ON HERMES LOW-POWER

Oak Ridge, Tenn. Groundbreaking Marks Start of First Generation IV Reactor Construction in the United States

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – September 08, 2022 – Kairos Power has started construction on the Hermes Low-Power demonstration reactor in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Hermes is a non-power version of Kairos Power’s fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (FHR) technology. The Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor will be used to demonstrate the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of FHR technology.

“This is a major milestone for Kairos Power and for the future of nuclear energy in the United States,” said Mike Laufer, Kairos Power CEO. “Hermes is the first Generation IV reactor to be approved for construction in the United States, and it will provide valuable data and experience that will help us to commercialize our FHR technology.”

The Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor is a 5 MWt reactor that will use Kairos Power’s proprietary fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor technology. FHRs are a type of advanced reactor that uses liquid fluoride salt as a coolant. Fluoride salts have a number of advantages over traditional water coolants, including a higher boiling point, lower pressure, and lower corrosion rates. These advantages make FHRs more efficient, safer, and more cost-effective than traditional reactors.

The Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor is expected to be completed in 2026. Once completed, the reactor will be used to demonstrate the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of FHR technology. The data and experience gained from the Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor will be used to help Kairos Power to commercialize its FHR technology.

Kairos Power is a privately held company that is developing FHR technology. Kairos Power’s mission is to make nuclear energy safe, reliable, and affordable.
