Lin Piao: A Chinese Military Leader
Early Life and Career
Lin Piao was born on December 5, 1907, in Huanggang, Hubei province, China. He joined the Communist Party of China (CCP) in 1925 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Red Army, becoming a field commander during the Chinese Civil War.
Role in the Communist Victory
Lin Piao played a pivotal role in the CCP's victory in the Civil War. As a skilled military strategist, he led successful campaigns against the Nationalist government forces, culminating in the Communist victory in 1949.
Political and Military Positions
After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Lin Piao held various political and military positions, including Minister of Defense, Marshal of the PLA, and member of the Politburo Standing Committee.
Cultural Revolution and Downfall
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Lin Piao became a close associate of Mao Zedong and was appointed Vice-Chairman of the CCP. However, Lin Piao later fell out of favor with Mao and was accused of plotting a coup. He died on September 13, 1971, in Mongolia under mysterious circumstances.
